Substitute Teacher Summary

San Juan Island School District is looking for energetic and motivated substitute teachers to work with students at all levels, from pre-kindergarten to high school. The best candidates for substitute teacher jobs have a bachelor’s degree and enjoy working with children. They are flexible and have some sort of experience working in education. Official experience and/or a state teaching license is good, but we welcome those with informal experience, too. For example, if you have worked successfully as a tutor, child care provider, babysitter or youth coach, you could be a great asset to our district. We have opportunities for the right candidates, you can prioritize schools sites of preference and days of availability. We use the new, state of the art Absence Management system, "Red Rover" and you’ll be notified via text message when an assignment opens up. Successful candidates will have to undergo FBI fingerprint background check at their own expense. Successful candidates who do not currently hold a Washington State teacher or substitute teacher certificate will need to obtain one at their own expense. The district will assist with the process.

What Does a Substitute Teacher Do?

(Long-term Substitute Teachers may be required to create classroom lessons on their own.) Substitute Teachers create and maintain a respectful and fair classroom culture that fosters safe and productive learning. Substitute Teachers monitor, observe, and report student behavior according to school policies and procedures.
